Head Start is required to provide a 20% match of grant funds. This match is achieved through volunteer hours, donations, working on projects for the classroom/center and completing take-home activities with your child.
"The Head Start Act stipulates that the federal share of the total costs of the Head Start program will not exceed 80 percent of the total grantee budget unless a waiver has been requested and granted (Head Start Act Section 640(b)). If the grantee agency fails to obtain and document the required 20 percent, or other approved match, a disallowance of federal funds may be taken. Non-federal match must meet the same criteria for allowability as other costs incurred and paid with federal funds."
In Head Start, in-kind (also called the non-federal share) is a mandatory 20% match. For every $100 a program gets from the government, it must raise $20 in local donations or volunteer work. This rule proves local support and keeps the program fully funded.
Parents are welcome to volunteer in their child's classroom at any time. We encourage you to become involved in the activities and assist the staff to the extent you feel comfortable. There are rules and regulations we have to follow for volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact your child’s teacher, or Mr. Allen, and you will receive the information required for volunteering. PARENT INVOLVEMENT IS HIGHLY ENCOURAGED (and very much needed).
We also hold monthly food drives; Parents are encouraged to volunteer. Keep an eye on the Faceboook page, website, and electronic sign outside the school to know when these are held.
